Thirty clubs from ten different regions around Victoria will receive a boost to their local canteen facilities this season, after being selected as recipients of the 2019 Energy Safe Victoria Safer Canteen Grants Program.
Selected from a pool of over 100 applicants, the successful clubs will receive up to $1,000 each to replace unsafe, broken or inefficient gas and electrical equipment in their canteens, to provide a safer environment for all volunteers and the wider community.
Since the program was established two years ago, it has generated significant interest.
Energy Safe Victoria’s Director of Energy Safety, Paul Fearon, said they were proud to work with AFL Victoria to support clubs to be more energy safe in their operations and increase awareness of safety issues at community level.
“ESV is proud to be behind a program that invests in the community by ensuring all those volunteers working behind the counter at football and netball canteens are safe,” Mr Fearon said.
“These volunteers are the lifeblood of their club and they deserve new and efficient appliances to support them in their work.
“Equally, through our ambassador canteens, ESV is able to get our safety messages to people from all walks of life as they line up for a pie or sausage roll.”
Head of AFL Victoria Rick Bell said the program showcases how hard we work with our partners to ensure grassroots clubs right around the state are supported.
“Facilities such as canteens are such a big part of a day out at community football, which is why we are thrilled to deliver a great initiative such as this.
“AFL Victoria would like to thank Energy Safe Victoria for their continued support and for allowing us to drive investment directly into our clubs,” he said.

“Currently, the club uses the electric oven on very low (with a spoon in the door to keep it agar) to keep some cooked food warm prior to serving, such as buckets of chips and jam donuts” Longwood FC
“The current oven is nearly at a state of non-workable, very hard to turn on and also at a stage where it is creating a safety risk for the club… facilities are over 25 years old and desperately in need of repair.” – St Mary’s
“Our Canteen facility is functional however the current fridge we have in place is very old, the seals are completely broken, the freezer door is hanging on by one hinge and it is highly energy inefficient” – East Ringwood
