The TAC Unity Cup has returned for its 16th year in 2023 and brought together more than 300 participants from diverse cultural backgrounds to engage with their peers and community through Australian rules football.

The centrepiece of the TAC Unity Cup is the ‘Gala Day’ event, which took place at La Trobe University in Bundoora last month. A second gala day this year is set for August.

Carlton AFLW stars and TAC Unity Cup ambassadors Darcy Vescio and Vaomua Laloifi were in attendance to meet and encourage participants.

The TAC Unity Cup program follows the modified AFL9s format, where teams compete in a round-robin style tournament throughout the day in junior (13-17 year old) and open age categories for boys, girls, men and women.

The program is supported by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Victoria and the L2P program, which is a community-based volunteer initiative assisting Victorian learner drivers aged 16-21 with no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

The TAC Unity Cup ‘Gala Day’ goes beyond the game itself, offering additional elements such as cultural dances and other activities to create welcoming and inclusive environments for all participants and supporters.
