The 2022 Herald Sun Shield Division One Boys competition has concluded with St Patrick's Ballarat and Whitefriars College crowned as the winners in their respective divisions.

The most dominant team in Herald Sun Shield history, St Patrick's Ballarat again found themselves in the Senior Division final having previously won the competition a staggering eight times - 2000, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. This was their 12th consecutive Herald Sun Shield Grand Final, the last of which was in 2019 when they went down to St Bede’s College.

They came up against an inspired and talented Whitefriars outfit — a school which also has a proud history in the competition having won in 2004 and who lost the Grand Final to St Patrick's in 2014.

Windy conditions made for a scrappy and physical contest which came down to the wire, however, on this occasion it was Whitefriars who came out victorious in a low-scoring contest winning 4.4 28 to 2.9 21.

After the match, Whitefriars coach, Kristan Height, praised St Pat's for their effort and complimented them on the quality of their football program and the dominance they have shown in the competition over the years. Height said he was excited by the prospect of the two sides meeting again with St Pat's set to join the Associated Catholic Colleges competition in 2023.

Captain, Lochie Reidy, led the way and was named best-on-groud for Whitefriars for his excellent work around the contest and his relentless attack on the ball.

Despite their dominance in the Senior competition, St Pat's had never made an Intermediate Grand Final, having suffered several heartbreaking defeats in previous semis.

However, this year they broke through to win their maiden Division One Intermediate title, defeating Parade College by four points in a thrilling contest 7.9 51 to 5.17 47.

Although they controlled the play early, Parade couldn't capitalise on their chances in front of goal, and St Pat's finished with the wind to come from behind and earn a hard fought victory.

Both sides had several players that impressed in tough conditions, but Ned Renfree was a class above the rest and was awarded best-on-ground honours.
