Football thriving in south-east

14 NOV 2018

While the curtain has closed on another football season, Australian Football continues to thrive in Melbourne’s south-east, with a host of football events set to come to the region this month.

Community venues across the AFL South East region will host a number of major football programs which focus on introducing Australian football to diverse communities and increase participation opportunities for people in the region.

The launch of two Towards Zero Unity Cup Hub programs will kick off in November, with the establishment of hubs in Dandenong and Casey.

The free Towards Zero Unity Cup Hubs will provide an opportunity for people to attend weekly football clinics to learn the basic skills of football and participate in an AFL9s style competition.

Running for six weeks across November and December, the Hubs will resume in 2019 where participants will continue to develop their skills ahead of the Towards Zero Unity Cup Gala Day in April.

In addition, the south east region will also welcome hundreds of participants and fans at the upcoming FREE Multicultural Footy Fun Day and Peregrine Cup on November 25.

Held in conjunction with the City of Greater Dandenong and St Kilda Football Club, the event will celebrate cultural diversity and inclusiveness with a host of family friendly activities for everyone to enjoy, including AFL player appearances, football themed inflatables, food stalls, give-aways and more!

A number of exhibition games will also be held throughout the FREE Multicultural Footy Fun Day, with the Peregrine Cup between representatives from the Indian and Sri Lankan communities highlighting the day.

The Towards Zero Unity Cup Hubs, FREE Multicultural AFL Footy Fun Day and Peregrine Cup are just some of a number of football events to be held in the region, following two Next Generation Academy School Cup events held last month.

Held in conjunction with AFL Victoria and the Melbourne Football Club, hundreds of students from different primary schools gathered for two Melbourne Football Schools Cup events for a round-robin competition which saw a host of students experience the joy of kicking around a Sherrin for the first time.

Over 450 school students from the Dandenong Casey region took part in the Melbourne Football Club Schools Cup on October 31st at Casey Fields, with St Kilda Football Club’s NGA School Cup event to be held on November 15 targeting schools in the West of Dandenong.
