The 2023 Herald Sun Shield interschool football competition commenced on Tuesday, July 25 with a triple-header of Intermediate Division One action in near-perfect conditions at Coburg City Oval.

Two girls Semi-Finals were played with Carey Grammar and Sacred Heart College Geelong earning spots in the Intermediate Girls Division One Grand Final, while Rowville Secondary College progressed to the Intermediate Boys Division One Semi-Finals with a victory over Caulfield Grammar in the Play-In game.

A commanding six-goal-to-two second half saw Carey kick away from Ballarat Grammar in the opening game and win by 27 points. In the second match, Sacred Heart overcame inaccurate kicking to post a solid 24-point triumph. The Grand Final will be played on Thursday, August 10 at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham.

The Intermediate Boys Division One competition featured a ‘Play-In’ game for the first between schools seeded fourth and fifth, with the winner to progress to the Semi-Finals. A strong second term saw Rowville take an 18-point lead into half-time and while Caulfield persisted, it wasn’t enough with the final margin 26 points.

Rowville, who won the Intermediate Boys Division Two competition in 2022, will face reigning Intermediate Boys Division One premiers St Patrick’s College Ballarat in a Semi-Final next Tuesday, August 1 at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. The other Semi-Final in the double-header will be contested by Parade College and Marcellin College.

First played in 1977, the Herald Sun Shield is in its 45th year of competition in 2023 and involves the best girls and boys school teams representing school associations and competing across eight divisions.

Seedings, which determine semi-final match ups in division one, are based on the performance of school associations and the teams that represented them in the 2022 competition. Senior divisions are open age while intermediate teams comprise players in Year 10 and below.
