The TAC Unity Cup brings together participants from diverse cultural backgrounds
For the second time in 2023 and in its 16th year, the TAC Unity Cup ‘Gala Day’ carnival will bring together multicultural communities from across Melbourne, using Australian football as the platform to celebrate diversity and inclusion in the game.

To be played at La Trobe University in Bundoora on Sunday 10 September, more than 20 teams and over 250 participants will compete in a round-robin event based on the AFL’s modified version of the game, AFL Nines, across different divisions, boys and girls (13-17 year-old) and men's and women's (open age).

Players will compete for teams representing the following:

- Glen Waverly Magpies
- Bharat Bombers
- Adam Saad Academy
- Malluana Hawks
- India Warriors BFC
- Gurkhali
- Wyndham Warriors

Head of AFL Victoria, Ben Kavenagh, praised the program for the positive impact it has on communities.

“The TAC Unity Cup program is a great example of the power of Australian football in bringing together people from culturally diverse communities to be active, engage with others and develop their love of Australian rules football.

“Thank you to the TAC for their ongoing support to ensure the Unity Cup continues and also helps to spread the message around the importance of gaining experience on our roads.”

The program is supported by the TAC L2P program, which is a community-based volunteer initiative assisting Victorian learner drivers aged 16-21 with no access to a supervising driver and a suitable vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

TAC CEO Tracey Slatter said having a driver’s licence enabled young people to gain access to work and study opportunities and connect with their community.

“There’s a myriad of benefits of being part of a sporting community, and the TAC is proud to be supporting these young people through the Unity Cup to become safe, licensed drivers,” Ms Slatter said.

Executive Director of Road Safety Victoria, Marcelo Vidales, spoke of the importance of the TAC L2P program in helping young people gain driving experience.

“The TAC L2P Program needs more volunteer mentors to help young people without access to a supervising driver or car reach 120 hours of driving needed to obtain their licence.

“If you’re over 21 with a full licence, search ‘TAC L2P Program’ online to find out how you can help a young person become a safe driver and achieve their goals”.

The TAC Unity Cup Gala Day will be a fun-filled event for families and friends of those involved and will feature cultural dances, jumping castles, face painting, a halftime sprint competition and AFLW player appearances.
