70 emerging umpires picked for 2023 V/Line Cup

It is not just the players who are selected to participate in the annual V/Line Cup based on talent and performance.
More than 70 umpires who are part of the V/Line Umpire Academy, aged from 16 to 32 and representing 16 metropolitan and regional umpiring groups, have been selected to officiate at the 2023 V/Line Cup, the annual carnival for the best boys and girls under 15 footballers from across country Victoria.
The three-day carnival will be held in Greater Shepparton next week from 25-27 September.
In 2023 the V/Line Cup umpiring cohort contains the highest number of female umpires ever - 19 of the 70 covering field, boundary and goal - with a highlight being two all-female umpiring panels set to officiate girls games on day one of the carnival.
Around 600 players will be on show representing teams from seven regions, with a total of 21 matches to be played across three venues.
AFL Victoria Umpiring Education and Support Lead, David Harris, said: “I would like to congratulate all 70 umpires picked from the V/Line Umpire Academy to officiate at the 2023 V/Line Cup, which is an excellent opportunity to recognise and reward umpires from across the state who have excelled in community football.
“One of the most encouraging aspects of the V/Line Cup umpiring group is the growing number of female umpires, in terms of overall participation growth but also the number of women and girls progressing through the umpiring pathway.
“Seeing so many talented umpires emerging and capable of progressing to higher honours in Victoria is fantastic for the game and hopefully we see many of the 2023 V/Line Cup umpires involved in the AFL and AFLW competitions in years to come.”
