2022 V/Line Cup wraps up in Shepparton

The 2022 V/Line Cup has concluded after 21 games were played in three days at four venues across Greater Shepparton this week.

Around 600 of the most talented under 15 boys and girls footballers from country Victoria, as well as emerging umpires, participated in the 73rd edition of the carnival, first held in 1949. Matches were played in excellent conditions in front of some large, enthusiastic crowds at Deakin Reserve, Mooroopna, Rumbalara and Princess Park.

In Boys Division One, Barwon was the only team to win both their matches - by 56 points over South East Stingrays and 84 points over Gippsland - and claimed the title, which is based on performance as well as the team that best displays leadership, teamwork, growth and development.

Standout players for Barwon across their games included Harry Morphett, Josh Lindsay, Oliver Johnson and Boston Riccardi, while Luke Norsworthy booted six goals across two outings.

Other players to produce eye-catching performances included South East's Benjamin Devenish and Jack Lawrence, GWV's Taj Bowman and Archie Taylor and Gippsland's Willem Duursma.

In Boys Division Two, GWV Rebels and Barwon both won two from two. Sam Kallio and Darcy Hutchins stood out across the two matches for the Rebels, while Charlie Meadows and Eamon Roberts put in excellent performances for Barwon. Bendigo was awarded the Boys Division Two title with Darby Jones and Bailey Ryan two of their best.

Barwon was also unbeaten in the Girls Division, meaning that region won all six of its matches across the three divisions. North East Border was also undefeated in the girls competition and was awarded the title.

North East Border’s Rose Bell produced one of the individual performances of the competition with 10 goals in her team’s 129-point demolition of Goulburn Murray. Jasmine Shanks, Molly McLaren and Sophie Reichman were also prominent for North East Border.

Barwon girls to excel included Meg Lappin, Stella Huxtable and Brodie Mitchell.

For Gippsland, Rebecca Fitzpatrick and Charlotte Anthony stood out and for the Pioneers, Jerrah Caruso booted eight goals in two games and Ella Jeffrey was named best afield for her team twice.

Shepparton also hosted the postponed 2021 edition of the V/Line Cup in April this year, which gave the under 15 age group from last year the opportunity to experience the historic competition. The carnival was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID.
