VICTORIAN BLIND FOOTBALL LEAGUE (VBFL)

The Victorian Blind Football League (VBFL) was launched in 2018, providing participants with a vision impairment the opportunity to play AFL in a regular competition down at Tullamarine Indoor Action Sports Centre.

The league featured 3 teams in 2023, with a five-round competition and finals. The Hawthorn Football Club had two teams in 2023 and St Kilda Football Club also had a team. The league has grown from 16 participants in the 2018 inaugural season to 38 participants in 2023.

The VBFL provides an environment that promotes fitness, fun, friendship and a sense of belonging, enhancing life skills, developing self-esteem, confidence and improved health..

About the Game:

AFL Blind looks like the traditional game with slight modifications to equipment and rules to support players with a vision impairment. This includes a specifically modified football that features a continuous beeping device to assist players tracking the ball and signage and flickering lights being centrally placed behind the goals to assist players with accuracy when kicking for goal.

Check out the video below, created for International Day of People with Disability featuring Bridget Jolley (Bombers - Captain), which explains how the game is played and what you can expect from AFL Blind.
