FIDA Football League returns

One of Victoria’s most loved football competitions returns to the field this weekend with the start of a new AFL Victoria F.I.D.A Football League season.

One of Victoria’s most loved football competitions returns to the field this weekend with the start of a new AFL Victoria F.I.D.A Football League season.

Established in 1990, the Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) Football League has been providing hundreds of people with disability the opportunity to participate in Australian Football at a competitive level.

Open to males and females aged 14 years and over, the competition has grown to include four metropolitan divisions and two regional conferences across Victoria.

All four metropolitan competitions and the Western Conference will kick off over the weekend of April 22-23, while the Northern Conference will commence on May 28.

Over 640 players from across 29 teams will lace up the boots in season 2017, including players from the recently returned Gippsland Football Club who re-entered the league after a surge in participation numbers over the off-season.

AFL Victoria FIDA Football & AAA Programs Manager Tim Nield said it was exciting to welcome a new season of FIDA football.

“FIDA Football League is about providing people with disability an opportunity to be physically active, build friendships, improve their confidence and experience that feeling of belonging that comes with all football clubs,” he said.

“We’re delighted to see the return of a number of familiar faces to the field this year, and welcome a host of new participants who are sure to enjoy kicking around a Sherrin each week.

“The joy of playing Australian Football is something all Victorians have the opportunity to do, so I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen a FIDA game to get down to your local competition and join in the fun.”
