Country Victoria’s elite and up-and-coming umpires have been working hard to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead this football season in the 2017 V/Line Umpire Academy.
More than 490 umpires have been nominated by their regional umpire groups to attend the V/Line Umpire Academy Program this season, which provides tailored training and specialised coaching to compliment the work done at local umpiring associations.
Five AFL Victoria Region Commissions will host the Academy program between February and May including AFL Western District, AFL Barwon, AFL Gippsland, AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges.
Male and female umpires aged from as young as 15 years will undertake a range of activities including on-field skill development, group discussions, effective communication sessions and personal development.
Four Academy sessions are conducted at each Academy venue throughout the season, where participants will also undergo a number of off-field coaching sessions including umpiring philosophies, personal goal-setting, the completion of self-development plans and an outline of what the year ahead will include.
Local Umpire Coaches who are active participants in the National Umpire Coach Accreditation Scheme also attend and conduct skill-based coaching sessions where the participants are exposed to “a different voice” where the expectations of the performances are extremely high.
